What we’re reading
Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
Fantasy isn’t a genre I normally find myself reading, but wow, is this story good. It’s written from the point of view of Fitz, the bastard son of a prince, who grows up in the royal stables where he learns to take care of dogs and horses while secretly training to become an assassin. The characters in this novel are colourful and complex, and Fitz’s narration is strangely intimate and introspective. I feel conflicted as I progress through the story — I want to savour it, but I’m eager to find out what happens next. Help! Thankfully, this is only Book One of the Farseer Trilogy, so there’s more to read…! — Justina
Books about Antarctica
I’ve read or listened to two books about early expeditions to Antarctica recently. First was Scott and Amundsen: Their Race to the South Pole. This was my first time ever listening to an audiobook and I was surprised how much I enjoyed listening.
I also read Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage.
These books tell stories of three explorers who each either tried being the first people to reach the South Pole or wanted to cross Antarctica and had themselves some memorable times along the way. Each involved assembling and leading teams, and I found it interesting how there were parallels to management books written much more recently. For example the difference between command-and-control and empowerment. The latter worked much better, and the former probably contributed sadly to several avoidable deaths. Previously I had thought that a leadership style of empowerment was a relatively new invention coming out of tech companies. But no, it’s been around for a long time! — Peter
